1. What we are aiming at

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, Level AA. That is the standard Australian government and most Australian enterprises apply, and web accessibility sits within the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).

We have not commissioned an independent audit. This statement is our own assessment, and it names what we know is imperfect rather than claiming conformance we have not had tested.

2. What we have done

• Contrast is measured, not guessed. Every text colour in the brand palette was checked against its background with the WCAG relative luminance formula. Body text on the page ground sits at 17.55:1. Our secondary grey sits at 6.78:1. The pale grey in the palette fails as text, so it is never used as text anywhere on this site.
• Our accent colour is never text on a dark ground. Oxblood on black measures 1.82:1. On dark sections it is only ever a solid shape, never a word and never a hairline.
• Motion can be switched off. If your system is set to reduce motion, the opening animation does not run at all, the scroll effects stop, the background animation is removed, and everything is simply present on the page. No content is delivered by motion alone.
• Keyboard first. Every link, button, filter and panel is reachable and operable by keyboard. Focus is always visible. Escape closes the menu and the catalogue panel. There is a skip link before the header.
• It works without JavaScript. Every page is real HTML. With scripts blocked you lose the animation and the catalogue filter, and you keep all the content and every link.
• Semantic markup. Real headings in order, real lists, real landmarks, one h1 per page, labelled form controls, and text alternatives on images that carry meaning. Decorative images carry empty alternatives so screen readers skip them.
• Zoom and reflow. Text scales with your browser setting and the layout reflows to a single column. Nothing is sized in a way that stops it growing.
• No meaning in colour alone. Build sizes in the catalogue are shown by counted markers and stated in text, not by colour.
• It prints. Every page has a print stylesheet that drops the navigation and animation and keeps the content.

3. What we know is not perfect

• The calculator on the home page needs scripting. With scripting off, the three sliders are hidden rather than left inert, and the page shows the default figures, the whole arithmetic and both cited sources as ordinary text.
• The total on that calculator is drawn as a rotating drum of digits. The value is also written to a live region, so a screen reader announces it when it changes, and the same figure is repeated in the line of arithmetic underneath. Under reduced motion the drum does not turn.
• The mark that rides the right-hand edge as you scroll, the extruded mark on the first screen, and the tilt on cards under a mouse are decoration. All three are hidden from assistive technology, none carries information that is not also written somewhere, and all three stop under reduced motion. The extruded mark and the tilt never run on a touch screen at all.
• Our display typeface is heavy and wide by design. Large headings are set in it. Body text is set in a regular weight for readability.
• No screen reader testing across the full matrix. We have not tested every page against every combination of screen reader and browser.

Nothing on this site is the only way to reach us. Email and phone are on every page, in text, and a person answers both. If any part of this site stops you getting what you need, use them and we will give you the information directly.
